Estimation of Inherent Optical Properties and the Water Quality Components in the Neuse River-pamlico Sound Estuarine System

چکیده
Field observations carried out in the Neuse RiverPamlico Sound Estuarine System (NRE-PS), North Carolina, USA were used to develop optical algorithms for assessing inherent optical properties, IOPs (absorption and backscattering) associated with water quality components (WQC). WQCs including chlorophyll a (Chl), volatile (organic) suspended solids (VSS), fixed (inorganic) suspended solids (FSS), total suspended solids (TSS) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption (aCDOM), were estimated using both in situ and satellite spectral data. Algorithms developed for both satellite and aboveand under-water applications, provided robust results. Radiative transfer approximation was used to estimate IOPs, including aCDOM. An assessment of VSS and TSS has been achieved based on a close relation between these WQC and Chl. In-water algorithm was validated by WQC field measurement data. A simple atmospheric correction was developed and statistically validated to allow for satellite remote sensor monitoring. Examples of WQC images are provided.

MERIS Retrieval of Water Quality Components in the Turbid Albemarle-Pamlico Sound Estuary, USA
Two remote-sensing optical algorithms for the retrieval of the water quality components (WQCs) in the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine System (APES) were developed and validated for chlorophyll a (Chl). Both algorithms were semi-empirical because they incorporated some elements of optical processes in the atmosphere, water, and air/water interface. One incorporated a very simple atmospheric correcti...
متن کاملCalibration of a Bio-optical Model in the North River, North Carolina (Albemarle–Pamlico Sound): A Tool to Evaluate Water Quality Impacts on Seagrasses
Seagrasses are typically light limited in many turbid estuarine systems. Light attenuation is due to water and three optically active constituents (OACs): nonalgal particulates, phytoplankton, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Using radiative transfer modeling, the inherent optical properties (IOPs) of these three OACs were linked to the light attenuation coefficient, KPAR, which was...
متن کاملComparative impacts of two major hurricane seasons on the Neuse River and western Pamlico Sound ecosystems.
Ecosystem-level impacts of two hurricane seasons were compared several years after the storms in the largest lagoonal estuary in the U.S., the Albemarle-Pamlico Estuarine System. A segmented linear regression flow model was developed to compare mass-water transport and nutrient loadings to a major artery, the Neuse River Estuary (NRE), and to estimate mean annual versus storm-related volume del...
متن کاملMeasurement of water colour using AVIRIS imagery to assess the potential for an operational monitoring capability in the Pamlico Sound Estuary, USA
The monitoring of water colour parameters can provide an important diagnostic tool for the assessment of aquatic ecosystem condition. Remote sensing has long been used to effectively monitor chlorophyll concentrations in open ocean systems; however, operational monitoring in coastal and estuarine areas has been limited because of the inherent complexities of coastal systems, and the coarse spec...
متن کاملEcosystem impacts of three sequential hurricanes (Dennis, Floyd, and Irene) on the United States' largest lagoonal estuary, Pamlico Sound, NC.
Three sequential hurricanes, Dennis, Floyd, and Irene, affected coastal North Carolina in September and October 1999. These hurricanes inundated the region with up to 1 m of rainfall, causing 50- to 500-year flooding in the watershed of the Pamlico Sound, the largest lagoonal estuary in the United States and a key West Atlantic fisheries nursery. We investigated the ecosystem-level impacts on a...
